Default GPS always on & the car burns oil !!!!

Hey all,

I have a 2001 A6 2.8 Quattro, I noticed that whenever my GPS is hooked up to the lighter socket and I shut the engine down, the GPS stays on......because I guess my car is equipped to operate all the electrical stuff even when the car is off........is there a way for me to adjust things so the GPS would shut off after the engine is off?

Alright on to part 2 of this , every 600-700 miles I have to add about a quart of oil to the engine because it burns oil , is there a certain type of oil that would last a little longer?

Thank you so much for your help.

Our cigarette lighters are always-on. If you want to have it turn off when you turn off the vehicle, you're going to have to hook it up to a switched source; i.e. something in the fuse panel. I have a fuse tap on - i believe - my fuel pump which is then connected to new cigarette lighter adapter, i plug my gps into this and then tuck away all the cords behind the fuse panel. You only need to connect the positive end to the fuse because you can ground it on any piece of metal inside the dash there.

What type of oil are you using? regardless you shouldn't have to put more oil in that often. You may have some seals or gaskets going bad - i'm not the guy to talk to about that, so we'll let somebody else answer.

You're leaking a serious amount of oil, i would be looking at the valve cover gaskets and cam adjuster seals.

Just turn off the GPS. Or leave it on -- that teeny weeny device should not hurt a healthy battery. I've forgotten to turn my radar detector off for days and the car starts right up.

I tried to watch out for any leaks but couldn't find any under the car or under the hood somewhere, and that's why I had to think the engine itself is burning the oil, I'm using synthetic mobil 1 oil and was told that using thicker oil might be better.....

Thanks nm3210 for the fuse tap, I guess I need to have that done professionally to avoid messing things up, I'm also going to see someone about the valve cover gaskets and cam adjuster seals......

thanks for the input everyone.

You're using good oil (Mobil 1 synthetic is pretty good stuff), but what weight of oil are you using? 10W-30? 5W-40? This of course doesn't change the fact that you have more serious problems going on.

Thats what i mean. Oil leaks from the valve cover and cam adjuster seals only leak when the engine is running, and they usually fall on top of the exhaust and evaporate, so you'll never see the leak on the ground. If you had an oil pan leak it would be everywhere. The PCV system might also be clogged up causing oil to be pumped into the intake as well, i would remove the intake hose to the air horn on the back of the motor an check for oil inside there too. If you notice oil in there replace the PCV valve.

I'm using 10w-30, so maybe I should use 5-40 instead? but I will get all the seals checked as well as the PCV, hopefully that will take care of the problem.
