Default engine coolant problems

Hey mechanic guys i got a doozie for you. My 2000 Audi A6 sports package is having engine coolant problems. For some reason, when i was driving last tuesday, the engine coolant icon came up on my dashboard. I stopped on the side of the road and there was steam coming from the engine, basically due to the coolant bubbling over from the side of the tank. The next day, i drive the car to the local VW dealership (im in college station, texas, so no audi dealer) and they tell me to buy their coolant to put in my car. I do that, and the car still gets too hot when i pulled over. I waited bout 3 hours and poured the rest of the gallon jug into the tank, and that barely fills it. I drive back to my apartment and the car does the exact same thing again, but the engine light comes on. I just gave up and towed the car to my local european/audi specialist and they said the engine coolant tank is fine, there doesnt seem to be a leak from the tank nor are there any hose problems, the tank was actually replaced at 75000 miles. My car has 100002 miles. Also, he said the radiator was fine and he is awaiting tests on the thermometer. I was wondering if you guys could help me out with this. I dont want to have to pay for over 1500 to fix it, and also i was wondering where the thermometer is located on the engine, what it looks like, and whether or not you have to take the front end off to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Default RE: engine coolant problems

Unfortunately the thermostat is an involved job that does require removing the front end, basically. Look on the bright side, you are more than likely due for a timing belt change anyways. Hopefully they come up with a cheap fix and send you on your way. Jeff
