Dead starter? and smoke from engine.
Hello all,
1999 Audi A6 2.8 Quattro 187k miles
Okay, so I posted something about a dead battery or alternator about 1 month ago, my car has been sitting since. Just today I jumped it, and it started with no problem. Now I drove the car around for about 5 minutes, then turned it off. I took the key out of the ignition, put it back in, the all the lights stayed on (which before the jump they would die out). Tried turning the car back on and I hear a rapid clicking sound, almost like a woodpecker. I believe it's the sound of a dead starter? I looked through some forums in the past and I saw a DIY on the Ignition switch, could this possibly be my problem?
Second problem..I'm getting smoke and a bad burning smell not sure what it is, coming from the back driver side engine compartment (neat the coolant tank). I recently (in the past 10000 miles) had a new camshaft tension er hydraulic assembly, timing component with seals, water pump, and valve cover gasket set. (This is actually my second valve cover gasket second I've been though in 30k miles). So I'm not quite sure, what it could be. I will post a video soon.
Thanks

on the driver side the half moon and tensioner are up front I think, so if the smoke is coming from the rear of the driver side of the engine then most likely its from the cam plug, they are a little hard to get out (dont worry about destroying them getting them out, new ones go in pretty easy. to get it out you need to punch holes into it from the sides and pry carefully so you dont make marks on the inside of them on the engine block where they go in....
clicking would be from either not enough battery power, or starter only partially engaged.

Before you get a new starter. Jump start the car once again or charge the battery and retry.

So I took my car in to a repair shop...the news is that the battery is dead, alternator and starter are working great...
The smoke I'm seeing is, which for some reason thought it was, is the last time I had an oil change the tank was overfilled the car sat for 4 months or so and the oil leaked onto the engine making it steam up when hot. They used some degreaser on it and and sprayed it down, they let it ran. Everything is good now!
