Wait it might not, now that I read page 2... I thought NH_USA was talking about 99+ C5s but it seems that it might just be for a C4 (and 98 C5 Avant) that the light replacements will work

I seem to be getting different responses...there's some confusion on the sedan and avant and years from '97-'99. I'm just going to have to take mine apart one day and see what I can find, just haven't had the time yet...

If anyone else decides to work on this anytime soon be sure to take pics and give us a detailed report.

From my '99 A6 Quattro ('98 may be different)

Okay, image of light bulb in instrument cluster:

MANY of the lights are on-board and cannot be replaced, just like the guy said (in the first post). You have not specified what lights are not working, take a picture - show us. Only a few can be replaced.

I don't have a pic but the lights I have that are not working are in the center of the cluster where the display is - malfunction codes/outside temp reading/miles to empty...

The LCD Display?!?! I thought that's what you were first talking about, but everybody else went off the other end. You cannot fix it. Look up "Fading Audi LCD Display" It is in fact NOT lights that are affecting the display. It is the LCD screen (image) that is going bad. There aren't many options and i would have to say a good majority of Audi, VW, BMW, etc. screens are all like this (fading).

The bulbs for the transmission position indicator and outside temperature are soldered to their printed circuit boards. You can get replacement 12 volt bulbs at Radio Shack. The Radio Shack part number is 272-1092, for a package of two bulbs. They also sell a desoldering wick, which soaks up the solder.
I have done this on a 1996 A6 Quattro and two 1998 A6 Quattro wagons, which have the C4 chassis.
The 1998 A6 Sedan has the C5 chassis. For the C5 chassis, Audi may also have soldered the some of the bulbs to the printed circuit boards, however I don't have a C5 Audi.

Long forgotten thread...I thought I'd update it with some pics for the ones stumbling in the future upon it out of need and wondering about it...
I myself never have had a lit gear shift display since I bought the car. Since the voltmeter and analaog clock's bulbs went out, it was a good chance to fix it as well.
Looking for information, I came across two wonderful write-ups which were very useful to me - needless to say that I must pay credit where credit's due.
One and the other

This is how the various bulbs are located on the board (the orange and blue units):

And while I'm apologizing for the quality (is just a older photo cam), here's the end result:

Hi there !

That is a very common problem to Japanese Vehicles!

I have seen what you are describing many , many times.
The speedometer will not work or be erratic.
