Default Central Locking System

Hello,

I have a 1996 Audi A6 with the old thin tiny 2 button keyless entry remote. It sucks, the reception is horrible and it's ugly.

I really want to have a switchblade key.

Before I get jumped on for being the newbie who is asking the same question that has been answered many times, let me say that I have done TONS of research before posting my question here.

Through my research I have come to understand that my year/make/model does not have a switchblade key. I also understand that one will NOT work with my central locking system.

I have an uncut switchblade audi key that I believe was pulled from a 2000 Audi A4:

FCC ID MZ2 410 819 6 4 PART NO 4D0.837.231D 46/00

I know that this will not work with my car, well, at least it will not with my car as of now.

What I was hoping to do, if possible, was get a central locking system that WILL work with this remote, and just replacing the one that is in my car, with one that will work with this keyfob.

Is it possible to swap them out like that just so that the switchblade keyfob will be compatible? Also I read that some Audi's have a seperate pump/control unit....and some have a combined pump WITH the FM control unit already in it.

If you think it's possible for me to swap out the unit, can anyone help me figure out which one to get, or at least tell me it's possible to swap out the units like that?

THANKS!

Wow. Hmm. I think that it's probably cheaper to just buy a newer audi. You'd have to rewire EVERYTHING so that things were compatible with each other which would be impossible. And I mean I don't want to be a jerk or anything, but it's just nothing that's practical or even feasible, at least from my knowledge. I would have to say SOL man.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The rewiring doesn't bother me, and the cost I will try to keep minimal by pulling the control unit from a local junk yard. I'm just hoping that it would be as simple as installing an aftermarket alarm system, only instead of using an alarm system purchased from Best Buy, pulling an OEM one from a newer model Audi

...pull the old one...match the proper wires to the proper outputs...and have the new system work. I even don't mind getting the VAG COM to reprogram things if I need to.

I'm very thickheaded and practicality never seems to be my "thing" when I'm determined to make something work...time, money, and headaches are acceptable. I just hope that it's POSSIBLE before I put myself through any of it...

Thanks again!
