But can this be fixed for that price? A dealer is going to charge an arm and a leg...I'd already be looking at $1,000 just for the tb/wp service, not to mention what they would charge for a rebuild.

And the used motors I've found so far are going for $1,000+ just for the motor...Idk what I'm gonna do with it yet...

Sorry for your loss.

My concern would be how many miles are left in that transmission? Would be a shame to spend a few k in the engine to have the transmission fail soon after.

I would never - never consider going to an Audi dealer for that kind of work.

Talk with a independant Audi guy. Depending upon how much damage occurred you might be able to get by with a few valves and a new belt etc. instead of a whole motor...

The results are in - timing belt is broke. Heads are coming off the car today so we'll know for sure how bad the valves, etc are today.

Anyone ever seen this much gunk and buildup around the front of the motor? Can you say "deferred maintenance"?

Good plan -- spend a few hours see how much work is needed.

You now know where all the pieces ot the TB went. I wouldn't be suprised if there was a bit of surp belt there also. My guess is that the TB has nevfer been replaced and you were lucky to get to 191K.

Watch out for a seized cam --- sometimes the oil passeges get clogged, the cam seizes and the TB breaks... You'll be able to tell by the color of the cam caps...

What exactly would I be looking for there (color wise)?

Anyone have a 2.8l 30v that would fit a '98 A6?

Default Same thing happened to me

2001 A6 2.8 just died driving down the road one day. It was the fuel pump. Relatively easy and inexpensive fix. I had about 110,000 miles at the time. My wife had a VW Passat wagon. Same thing happened to her twice on the interstate. Audi/VW fuel pumps seem to be problematic.

I wish mine was a fuel pump - mine was timing belt which is not an easy nor inexpensive fix
