Camshaft Positioning Sensor

Camshaft Positioning Sensor
Thinking of changing it myself. Tired of Audi raking me over the coals.
Anyone done one? Looks like two bolts. Anything I should know?
It's a 2005 A6 4.2.
Audi diagnosed it. They just changed my valve cover gaskets when I noticed the car acting strange. Immediately went back and mysteriously this now needs to be replaced.
Says Bank 1 which is passenger side. When I try and locate the part, some sites call it "right" or "left" side. Which do they mean by that?
I'm dreading this is going to somehow lead to needing a timing belt.

Jackmup can probably tell you more than anyone else if it's a simple job or it entails a few prestidigitation acts.

I was trying to look on VagCat, but can't find specific part numbers for the 4.2L.
In any event, probably because they might mount differently or solely for discrimination purpose (left from right) the sensors found have different part numbers.
Oh...almost forgot: right side - passenger side; left side- driver side; that's the convention.

I was hoping Jack can tell you more since he has a 4.2L and he had the engine apart.
On my 2.8L actually I only have one sensor on the driver side and it is as simple as unplugging it, unscrewing the two 10M bolts, and getting the new sensor in. (I had to take mine out to check the camshaft seal)

Thanks again Chefro, I'm going to go for it.
I see the part is 20-30 bucks. Audi wants 215 plus tax to change it.
Went in for a routine oil change and it never fails they find something else. 700 dollar valve cover gasket job.
The car was running fine when they got it. And now that I know where this thing is, right under the valve cover gasket, sure think they did something, like got oil in it.
Oh by the way, I will verify but I think my car has a timing chain, not a belt
Do you know which vagcom will work on my car? Gotta start doing this stuff myself.

A guy here at work has the OBDII.
Code is P0342
Says camshaft positioning sensor "low circuit" bank 1
Waiting for the sensor to get here. In the mean time I cleared it and I'll wait to see what it comes back as.
