battery hell...

Before you can do that you need to get the gloves with the silicon gell insulation from the electrical safety oversite department and find the green electron bucket with a double "OO" ground strap.

Bodja,
You're showing your age. In the old days you got sent for a bucket of steam (We didn't have electricity), or, in the Navy, we got sent for some "relative bearing grease", or, industry again, a skyhook.
Vented batteries, I have had '79, '80, '81, '82. '85, '87, '90 and '97, 5000, 100, and A6, and ALL have vent tube and vent hole in the floor under the back seat.
OOPS! My ''81 and '82 were Diesel. Battery was under the hood. No vent. The rest all had vents and a new battery always came with a connector and extension tube to mate with the existing tube grommeted into the floor of the car.
I would bet that VAG makes all their cars with underseat batteries with vent tube, and I would also bet that if you should search enough, you would find that the US law will not allow the car to be imported with an unvented battery inside the cabin.
Come to that, if you go in for annual inspection, with a savvy Inspector, your car might even fail a safety inspection for lack of vent tube.
Though it might not be a cataclysm, it is not exactly the epitome of SAFE. Short to ground could fill the cabin with an explosive mixture, however low the likelihood.
I'll take a picture, too, one of these days. My '97 and your '96 should be the same in that respect.
Cheers,
George

well, the battery in my car is under the hood right up against the fire wall and i had it replaced along the oil changed at audi. i had an appointment but still sat in the waiting room for nearly 3 hours.
all in all it cost me $356.45 ! wtf?
everything does work and they detailed the car inside and out -which i would have rather done myself and left an hour sooner.
as they handed the keys over to me, they provided me with a warning and an estimate for tailshaft seal leak which will only cost $575 installed!
f'ng great...

Yea the stealership is a joke when it comes to battery install quotes - A while ago I had to go to a different Audi dealer than my usual one and I wasn't even there b/c of my battery, but for a wheel alignment after replacing my TRE's - however they stated I had the "wrong kind" in the car because it wasn't OEM Audi - quoted new battery $150 and I believe somewhere around $100 to install!? HA - you've got to be kidding me, right? Well, recently my old battery did start to lose juice so I went and got a new OEM Audi one at MY dealership where I paid $130 for the batt and installed it when I got home within 10 mins. $100/install...man I feel bad for people who go by every word they say and don't know any better!

well, sears was in fact the first place i went. i asked them about maintaining power to the car while swapping batteries but said they couldn't guaranty that they wouldn't lock the radio and accompanying systems without the code (that i didn't have).
i figured i would bite the bullet and have it done and get the code for next time.
over and out
