I just traded my 02 2.7t in on a 05 4.2 and can tell you the V8 will get slightly better milleage overall. I loved my 2.7t and put 114,000 miles on it. It had its quirks and at times I said I would never have another Audi. However, after one drive with the 4.2 in a sport suspended new chassis, I knew it was for me. The bonus was getting increased fuel milleage to boot. I can get 29 on the computer which is an actual 26.5 on the highway running about 70. My 2.7t would never do that. best it could muster was 23 on computer and 21.5 actual. Average running around for me was 20 with 2.7t. With 4.2 its about 22. I don't understand the window sticker rating on my 4.2 being 17/23 if it does better than my old 2.7t which was 17/24.

Congrats on your newly aquired 4.2.
I held out over a yearsearching formy 02 4.2 blk/blk, sport pkg.
I couldn't afford the low mileage cars and settled on 94K miles for $14,100 with Certified warranty until 100K miles. Not much, buta littlebuyer security. I have been through the timing belt change on my 2001 4.2 with 104K miles with almost everything else changed out while the front end was removed. Read up on timing belt change on the Forum and you can save some bucks. Audi recommends the timing belt change at 105K miles for the 4.2 but I would do a little sooner if dealer coded records show it hasn't been done yet and you can do the work yourself.
