Default A6/A4/A8 radio - do they all fit and work in an A6?

I have a 2000 A6, and the radio is broken. I need to get a new one. I see many units on ebay, but most are for an A4. Does anyone know if the radios are interchangeable? Can I use an A4 radio in my A6, and will it fit, and will all the features work? I know that the model numbers are slightly didifferent...

Please help...

Hello.
I have an A6 1998. When I first got it we had many engine management problems. During the service they upgraded the firmware to the vehicle. After this was done after twenty minutes of driving the radio display would disappear from the computer display in the drivers console. It took a long time for them to work out the relationship between the upgrade and the radio fault. The fix was to now upgrade the radio from an allroad which solved the problem. So I'm in a mind that there is a variety of radios that work with different in dash display and their firmware. Hope this helps. Gavin

I was also thinking the year of manufacture may be more relevant.

If it is the same type, model of head unit I think it should work. Though there may be a different security code.
