A6 2.7T Ignition Coil Caught Fire and Melted
Hi Folks,
Just thought I'd share this with everyone to see if it's happened to anyone else.
My 04 A6 2.7T was sitting in my garage, I had just washed it and was giving it a clay bar treatment when smoke began to waft out from under the hood. The key was in the ignition, which was in the off position. I lifted the hood in a panic and the coil pack on cylinder #5 was literally flaming. I extinguished the fire, disconnected the battery and took photos of the damage.
I know that there was a recall for ignition coils that spanned several years and models, and I've had this car since 08. What causes this? Do the coils have a 12V supply to them even with the ignition off? I submitted the pics and info to the dealer, waiting to hear back. I can get a replacement coil easily, but the pigtail connector to the coil is toast....how do I replace that?
I know....I'll snip one off the motor in the wife's 05 Allroad [/B]
Pics are attached as well if links to DropBox have expired.

We can help you get the parts you need to repair what has happened. I haven't heard of this happening myself, but others should chime in on that. The 3 wire housing should have this p/n on your others, to match up, should be 4D0-906-232 for 16.86 each. The wires with terminals factory crimped on the ends are 4.59 each and you'd need 2 of them. They are a 15 inch long wire with a factory crimped terminal on each end, so you buy one, cut it in half and get two. But you need 3 terminals so you have to get 2 of the wire assemblies. This is offered in two sizes, one is about a 16-18 gauge wire, other is 14 gauge. So let us know what the wire size is on that area of the harness. The ignition coil is 058-905-105 for 75.00 dollars. All in stock but the connector, 2-3 days away for that.
Then you wire up the new parts into your existing harness. You might want to inspect your other coil connectors to see if they terminals inside look burned.

Hey! I got a reply...wait, what?
Thanks for the speedy reply Jeff, but I gotta ask...did you even look at the picture in the post of the burnt 4 WIRE connector? I understand you're trying to help the members of this forum, and in exchange you'll get some parts business out of it. That's fine, but if you don't provide accurate information, you're wasting everyones time. That's why we're here...to get answers.
The correct Audi part number is 4B0 973 724, and it's widely available.
So are the grommets (357 972 741 A) and wire (000 979 133 A). If the dealer blows me off (likely) then I'll get these from ECS, who I've been doing business with for several years.
Better luck next time.

I'm sorry, I did make a mistake on the year/model 2.7 engine. I saw the up to 02 APB 2.7 that has the 3 wire, and the 02 and on BEL 2.7 does use the 4 wire. I'd have caught that if I didn't just skim over the pictures. I did look at the pictures but clearly not in enough detail. You are 100% correct in providing correct info, my apologies to all involved on this one. Thanks for keeping me on my toes IPStevieB!

Just want the terminals
Hello I see all the dealer offers for this issue is a splice option. What about just the terminals for the end of the wire that snaps into the connector? It makes no sence to me splicing on to awire when all I have to do is crimp it on myself. I just need to know where to get the terminals and the little grommets. Any Ideas?
