A4 3.0 or A6 4.2 (early 2000)
#12
I have both and the 3.0 is a total train wreck pos. I fi listed everything i have done to my 3.0 it would be a collectors classic by the time you finished reading it.
1) 8 cylinder engines by" the rules of the force" are better running engines by far than any 6 cylinder the extra two pistons help it work through any hangups or misfires.
2) my 4.2 has a T belt like the 3.0. It took me just as long to do the 4.2 as the 3.0, However it was my first time on the 4.2 and i have removed the 3.0 belt to repair other things at least 20 times and can do it drunk with my eyes closed. (that is an Audi requirement by the way, I read it somewhere!- oh but don't worry it doesn't have to run.)
3) the 4.2 is better on fuel, Effin believe it because it's true, true,true!!! 80city/20hwy driving 3.0 Avg- 18MPG, 4.2- 22MPG from a 400HP engine vs a 3.0/240??? I find that sort of amazing, We are so getting screwed by big oil!
I'm pretty friggin **** with my cars I wish they drove as smooth as chevy trucks (right Nate!).
Your going to have major maintenance in any used Audi, The previous owners had no clue what any of that crap under the hood is and although Audi has no shame in the billing dept, even they can't do everything or the people would have a massive bill and never return.
I say 4.2
scan the ecm for fault codes before you buy it.
once you own it;
change every imaginable fluid,filters, belt, hose, valve cover gaskets, thermostat and water pump, tensioners, rollers check the brakes and rotors get it aligned. That will get most of the crap off your back right there.
If you buy the 3.0, well put it this way I would see if snap-on has a preferred customer discount because your going to be there best customer
Oh let me introduce you to my 3.0, don't worry it's always like this!
