Vacuum cleaner would be a good description.

SSn, I noticed you are located in Edina, MN. I am in Eden Prairie, would love to have ssomeone else take a listen to see whether this is normal or not.

Thanks,

Sorry for the duplication

Mine sounds like a jumbo jet either taking off or cutting the engines when its on and off, it hasn't gotten progressively louder since I got the car so I deem mine within operating conditions for now I guess.

I've had my AC on couple times, I've not noticed any super loud noises... I guess your fans are worn out. They too have bearings inside %)

Lsand, you are welcome to drive by my place, I'll listen to it. I'll send you a PM.

I have the sameissue. Drives me nuts. I've been told it's the auxilary fan and thatit's normal, but it's waytoo loud that I can't imagine Audi would be fine with it. Sorry I don't have much more to add, but I will keep an eye on additional responses for some clarity. Good luck.

ORIGINAL: SSn

When it's noisy try CAREFULY touching around it's base to make sure nothing is loose nbefore you replace the whole fan.
Yikes, putting your hand up a hot fanny is dangereous business...

I've got three fans in my2001, two electric and one mechanical. AC on, noisy, AC off, not so noisy. I guess I join the club then...

Oh, how many fans are there supposed to be!

Mine is exactly the same, only when the AC is on. The local dealership says the sound is normal, but it certainly sounds like a Jet Engine, very annoying. My questions is, has anyone replaced the fan, and has that solved the sound. I would hate to replace the fan and still have this noise.
