89 octane should be ok ( as long as they say its ok in the book ) but you will loose some power and get less MPG but marginal,
UK Audi only allowed to use 95 or better but never seen anything lower than that here

I believe my 2.7T has higher compression than your 3.0 (but I could be wrong), and I've used midrange 89 for the past 60K miles without problems. I occasionally tried some premium but found no real difference in either mileage nor performance. But I never did an extended comparison. Neither do I run it hard either.
I did find the mileage suffered when I used midrange with 10% ethanol. Mileage is 1-2 mpg less. I avoid it but it's sold at the last station in MI before I go into Canada, and it's cheaper to fill at <$3/gal stateside than ~$4/gal in Ontario.

Think about it, the difference is about 10 cents a gallon and your car holds 18-20 gallons. If you can't afford the 2 bucks more per tank, you shouldn't have bought the car or you can skip your Starbucks in the morning. It does make a difference in the long run.

^ im with him. i only use 93 in mine. i know it costs a bit more, but id rather use the cleaner gas so theres crud built up in the motor over the years, i plan to keep this car for a while. i have programs in my chip for stock, 91 and 93. i can use anything from 89-93 basically, but i wont touch anything under 93, but thats just me

I don't fill anything other than premium, here in Canada they've started mixing Ethanol (10%) in with the fuel at some stations as well as some others have subpar gas really.
I generally go with Shell or Esso and go for their premium grades. It doesn't cost that much more per fillup but I like to think it makes a difference in the Audi. I had a 1990 Civic LX that was still running perfectly after all those years and I like to think it had at least something to do with the choice of gas.

I heard gas prices in the UK are much higher than USA.
Me, I use the highest possible. Haven't tried to put any octance booster in the tank yet...so what's everyones recommendations on that?
