There's a rhyme, something with "pants on fire" .
I understand though that's easier to just ask.

Nice looking car, by the way.

I hate to dig up old threads, but I had to point out that this isn't a true statement. The Audi Allroad 4.2 (circa 2003) had a timing chain instead of toothed belts. Thanks for playing!

"As for the timing belt, I'm well aware I'm at the point that it should be replaced. I've got a shop close by that will replace the timing belt, tensioner, idler pulley, water pump, thermostat, and do a complete cooling system flush and fill for about $900."

I'd suggest caution here, unless the shop is in charity business...

If for more than 1 1/2 years he didn't post anything bad about that particular shop, then I would assume they really do it for $ 900 and right.
Come to think, all the parts mentioned can be bought for less than $ 200...
If I would have my own shop, I would do it for $ 700 without thinking that I'm charitable.

Ooo,
Good catch Chefro!

Khardysius,

AR 4.2 is with many chains (5), but they are on the back of the engine!
That engine is AR specific and no A6 has it!
(information taken from my Bentley)

as for the $ 900 TB +++ TB job - I would not be surprised if the user still recovering from the real bill and consequences.

You may be right...that could have been just the "facade" price to lure him in.

No way $900, Did mine myself for $800 in parts and a the cam lock.

Water pump
T-stat
Timing and accessory belt
rollers
gaskets
coolant

I also did the valve cover gaskets, and probably some other crap I found broken or broke myself on the way.

Try $900 for a belt and a can of spray paint to make those old parts look new again. But for $900 I would replace just the belt on one. I 'd give you **** about not replacing the other parts but I would do it. $800 for a days work- not so bad.

Honestly though those of us who work on our own cars know There is no way you are replacing just one part.
NOT ON AN AUDI!

Isn't that right Chefro

LOL, I totally forgot about this thread. An update on the tb service, when all said and done it was $1300 including an oil change. Not too worried about that as it needed to be done. Early c5 4.2's had a timing belt, as said before the chain drive didn't come until later years. I was running castrol syntec (not the blend) 0w-40 in my car for over a year with no problems, my mech just actually switched me over to **** oil. It's a german synthetic that he puts in all the audi's and mb's that he works on, and it's about $0.50 cheaper than castrol, go figure. No problems with the car, just replacing the wear and tear parts that hadn't been addressed. After over a year and a half of owning the car I've already logged 35k on it and loving every moment.
