RE: 357 miles to a tank sound good.
I'm one of those ****-retentives who keeps a log book for his 2003 A6 2.7T MT6. I bought it with 37548 miles in Mar05 and currently have 82349. It has a K&N airfilter and I installed a GIAC chip at 74425. I use exclusively mid-range gas. I record the miles driven divided by gallons to get my mpg for each tank.
In spite of the chip, I drive it gently, often shifting below 2000 rpm. I do a lot of highway driving and usually cruise at 75-90.
I drove to Detroit and back last night (@ 350 miles round trip) at 75 outbound and 80-90 return. I filled it when I got home and calculated 21.6 mpg. Earlier in the week I went to Midland and back (@ 300 miles) and drove the speed limit both ways, a combination of 55 and 70 mph roads. I calculated 24.7 mpg. You can do the math to figure out how far you can go with an 18 gallon tank. BTW, most of this driving is flat (this IS Michigan).
Overall I plan on 360-380 miles to a tank of gas, usually averaging between 20-23 mpg.
By comparison, I have a 2005 Crossfire Roadster with the 3.2 engine and driving the same way, I get 25-27 mpg.

I just got 400 mile to a tank on my 03 A6 4.2 today! I am driving 60/40 highway/city. I tried not to push it hard at all this time and look: 400 mile! My computer says: average MPG 19.2. IfI am driving as usual, I got about 18 mpg in the city.

I do 50/50 freeway/traffic
I get around 380 - 400 miles on one tank. i do push hard though.
I get through 1G of Methanol/Water a week ($2)
My gauge reads 26mpg most of the time. But we all know they are off by a %.

Hi There. I have a '00 4.2 with 180K km. My mileage is pretty decent. Around town it is typical of what others mentioned. Strictly highway...from the fillup onto the highway at ~120kph with fairly hilly terrain (west of Calgary Alberta), I can consistently get around 8.5-9.5L/100km (31-33 imp. miles per gallon, 25+ish US gallon?). THat may or may not incluse so high speed affairs in the passing lane;-)
I'm new to the forum BTW. Been around Saabs, Volvo, BMW for many years (and Rolls Royce RB211 turbines;-), and I am thoroughly enjoying my A6. It will take quite some arm pulling to swithc marques now!
Cheers
Steve, 00 A6 4.2
