Default 2003 A6 4.2L Transmission prob HELP!!

I bought a used 03 A6 4.2L couple of years back. I have about 100k miles on it now. Have had no problems until recently. It started with an occasional jump/slip when accelerating. I ignored it for couple of weeks until the transmission seemed like it was stuck in a higher gear (no torque) with a burnt-oil smell. I brought it to the dealer and they recommended that I replace the transmission ($6700). The thing is that, I am not sure if I need one. When the car is sufficiently cooled, it is back to normal as if there is no problem. After it has run for about 10 miles, the car loses all torque (it barely moves even with full acceleration). Another interesting thing is that the car runs fine in reverse. I also have the check engine light on.

I called Audi USA and they clearly said that they will not assist in this regard.

I definitely do not want to spend $6700 getting a new tranny. Is there a remote chance that this could be some small issue (e.g., ATF, Trans' contro unit prb etc)? Would really appreciate suggestions from experts. Thanks in advance!

I would try changing the filter and refilling it to the proper level with fluid. YOU MUST GO to a european shop for this because Audi has no idea how to do it.

If that doesn't help sell it.

Thanks much. I will try doing exactly that. I see you are from FL but would you happen to know any good Euro Car technician in the White Plains, NY area?

dont know about the white plains area but there is a guy that i take my 4.2 to in the west haverstraw area.

The place is called Edge Motors and it is off of railroad ave, west haverstraw, ny.
Its off of exit 12 off the palisades parkway.

you would have to ( i believe ) jump on 287 and then the palisades parkway to get there but look up edge motors and you'll find all the info.

you responded to my post. i have a similar problem. mine also runs fine when it is cooled down but loses all torque upon warming up. someone on this forum suggested it could be either the torque converter or control module. the mechanic told me that they are using a computer to reprogram it but i have no idea what that means. also i don't know how it will act when i get it back and drive it for a long time. mine was also jumping upon acceleration before it just stopped moving completely. i suggest you get a second opinion and let me know what they say. i will also keep you updated on the status of my audi, sounds like the same issue.

I had to put a transmission in a 1998 A6, dealer quoted closer to $9k. Ended up buying a rebuilt and had the dealer do the install. Total was around $3k, probably closer to $2,500 at an independent shop.
