Default 2001 Audi A6 4.2 Quattro V8 clear leak on the garage floor?

Hello guys,
I'm new to this forum and I would really appreciate the help. I have a 2001 audi A6 quattro 4.2L V-8. Lately i been noticing clear thick leak on my garage floor. It's not pink or coolant. It's probably not oil because It looks almost clear new. I'm thinking it's the transmission leaking but when i jacked up the car, I don't know where to first look? I need help and pointers to where i should be looking. Also it seems to leak overnight and not much when driven during the day? Thanks

When you touch the fluid, is there a viscosity to it?

Transmission fluid really isn't clear, not that I've ever seen. Worst case taste it, could just be the AC discharge or a mineral water leak.

It is probably the A/C evaporator water drainage or cosmoline wax(rust inhibitor). You should took it and rub it between your fingers to see if it is viscous like two pedal said or does it feel like water..

What you're seeing is probably gear oil leaking from the transmission output shaft seal. These cars are notorious for having leaks from here. My car now has 90,000 miles and I've replaced mine twice since new.

Yeah I have a 99 a6 and at first I thought it was tranny fluid but it was gear oil. My tranny was acting up and the puddle was getting bigger and bigger by the day but when I got it fixed it was the gear oil, it was a clear but smokey blackish color. That was the only way I could describe it.

Probably gear oil. Lift a little off of the floor onto your finger, then sniff it. If it stinks to high heaven (kinda like rotten eggs), I'd be willing to bet its gear oil leaking past the poorly engineered rear output shaft seal.

Here's a link deatiling seal replacement on an A8 but the procedure for the seal replacement on the A6 is nearly identical.
