My car did something similar the other day. I waited 30 minutes, tried it again (and pressed the gas a little when turning the ignition), and it worked.

I heard that you have to turn the key into the on position (without turning on the car), wait a few seconds, and then turn on the car. Is this true? Does anyone else do this?

So I pulled the timing belt cover and asked my son to turn the motor over... this time the timing belt was not spinning when the engine was turning over.

Looks like it wasn't the starter after all.

The engine was spinning but it without getting any compression because the valves were open.

Looks like the timing belt broke.

Again thanks for everyones assistance and AudiForums.com is a great source of helpful info.

Bummer on the TB. Hope the valves didn't get taken out. Are you going to try to repair it yourself?

No compression in the first cylinder.

Apparently the timing belt spun some teeth and the pistons made contact with the valves.

I thought about having the heads pulled, but it makes more sense to just get a low milage 2.8 engine to replace the one that's in the car.

No matter how you look at it... it's still going to cost me some bucks.

I'm sick!
