Default 2000 A6 2.8 Quattro => Some questions

Bought this car for my mom 2 weeks ago.

Firstly, the garage replaced some parts of the exhaust and now the one exhaust-end touches the rear bumper slightly which caused the bumper to melt a little and the other exhaust-end is now visible when standing behind the car. The exhaust-ends are supposed to be hidden behind the rear bumper. The car's exhaust note is rather booming now. It's a nice sound, but this is an exec saloon. Quietly wafting along is the key here..

Then there is a humming sound coming from the right rear wheel at about 60-70km/h (40mph). Today I also noticed some humming at about 70mph.

We also have the tugging/grinding noise when doing a sharp turn. This seems to be common to Quattro cars and not to be a great problem.

We also have a problem with the front left electric window. It winds down easily, but it struggles to wind up. It seems like the independent garage that did the last service oiled/greased the sides of the window and it winds a bit better now.

The car has been driven only in town since we had it and consumption is a whopping 14mpg(US)! We have driven it very very sedately, but it doesn't want to improve. Could it be that they fitted the wrong exhaust parts and that this could have an effect on the consumption?

Our car needs new rear shocks. Would it be possible to get some generic ones from the usual tyre and shock shops, or should we get the original parts from Audi?

Sorry for all the questions... but your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx for a great forum. Some nice feedback here!

A humming noise from the rear could be the bearing starting to go, or a bad tire. For the grinding noise, IF you turn the wheel sharply, and it souds like a "clunk, clunk" , check the CV joints.
For city driving, your fuel mileage doesn't sound too far off, maybe a little low, when was the last tune up? And it does sound like the wrong exhaust parts/ muffler were used ( probably due to costs).
Good luck with that, sounds like this A6 needs some TLC.

for a 2000, it's bearings shouldn't be going out.
