2.7t valve cover gasket replacement
i have an oil leak on my 2.7t that i have concluded is most likely comming from the valve cover gaskets or cam seals, so i have decided to just replace both.
i am just wondering how difficult of a procedure this is.
Will i need to disassemble all of the cam timing and take of the timing belt?
is this something i can handle? or should i just take it somewhere to get it done and not screw with it?
all help or input is appreciated. thanks

The valve cover gaskets aren't tough but replacing the cam seals is. There are shortcuts to replacing some of the seals, but, like most shortcuts, the results aren't necessarily the best. The killer is the seals behind the cam gears. They require disassembly of the front of the car plus the special tools for aligning the cams.
AS for whether you can do it or not, that depends on your skills, experiences and tools, so no one here can answer that for you. Look on AudiWorld under the DIY section and you can find DIYs for both the front seals and the other seals.
Good luck,
Bob

well its my rear cam seals that have the leak. however i figured it was best to just do all of those top end seals while i had it all apart. how much do the timing tools cost ? im assuming you mean the cam lock bar and crank pin?

blauparts has a upper seal kit that contains the all the gaskets you need as well as the cam tool (though I think the tool might be for rental). this is a common leak and there are plenty of DIYs out there, just follow them carefully and think about what you are doing and you should be fine.

I just did this project and the one problem is that the tool rental from Blauparts does not include the tool to hold the cam tensioner and this is an issue! I already had the parts and the rental tools before I realized this so I had to make a tool to get the job done as I only had a few days with the rental tools before they had to be returned. I cant remember the number for the tool but if you have a bentely look it up and make sure you have that tool before starting it will save you alot of grief.

save the front cam seals for when you do your timing belt .. it is exactly the same procedure so wait till then. This week I did the VC gaskets, the rear cam plugs and the tensioner seals with the compresion tool .. nothing about it was hard , just be patient and take your time. PS i have a 2.8

Oil leak
Hi all, I have just had the rocker gasket cover and cam timing belt replaced on mt Audi A6 TDI SE. I drove it home and reversed up the drive and it started smoking from under the engine around the wheel arch and now it is leaking oil from under the front if the car. Only had it repaired today and garage closed till Monday.... Any ideas... Thanks
