1999 Audi A6 - WHITE SMOKE!
Hello Everybody,
I am experiencing white smoke coming from my exhaust and under the hood on the passenger side. There is a distinct oil/gas? smell once I am finished driving. One can faintly smell it at times while driving, but for the most part it goes unnoticed. I am also being met by a CEL with the code of P0440. I have noticed no performance issues and my oil level and coolant levels are unaffected.
I've been reading quite extensively but have to find a probable solution. If you could please provide assistance it would be appreciated!

Code P0440 could mean one or more
gas cap is not installed or bad
purge solenoid has failed
canister or hose is plugged, disconnected or torn.
Solutions......
Check gas cap
Inspect the EVAP system hoses
look for damaged hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
Check canister Purge Regulator Valve (N80)
Check Canister Purge Solenoid Valve (N115)
I would start their for the code. As for the white smoke maybe a different issue.
What engine?

PhilipM gave you good advice for the best way to start diagnosing the CEL/Diagnostics Code.
As for the, "white smoke" are you sure its smoke and not water vapor your seeing? Depending on the outside temp and humidity levels, the smoke you say you're seeing from your exhaust may just be water vapor from the combustion process which is perfectly normal. The smoke you're describing under the hood sounds most likely to be something....possibly an oil or coolant leak that is burining off from the hot exhaust. Have you looked under the hood with a light to see if any fluids are leaking down onto the exhaust??
P.S. It helps when you post to share your year, model, engine and tranny info :-)

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I went ahead and replaced the gas gap to see if that would take care of the CEL. As of yet, the CEL is still on.
I feel there is a connection between the CEL and the white smoke though as the two symptons occured at the same time.
Tomorrow I will look down at the exhaust and see what I can find.
