'05 A6 3.2l timing chain tensioner failure
hey....!
Just got a '05 A6 with the tensioner/chain guide gone. Probably a few valves are bent. I was looking to get another engine, and just swap it, but the 05-06 are much more expensive than the 07-08-09... what's the difference between them? How about if i will try fixing this one? only 65k on it. Is it worth fixing it?
thanks

It looks like the engine is a BKH series, and the short block part numbers are the same for the year ranges you mention. But the long block with heads is different and the year split is in 06-07. The changes appear to be the cylinder heads and some of the tensioner components in the back. The only specific thing I see different on the part numbers are the exhaust valves that changed from 05-06 and up. There could be other changes like casting designs that I can't tell from parts diagrams.

Below is the picture for the cam chain and tensioner parts. Looking at schematics in more detail the things that change between the up to 06 and the 07 and on 3.2's are these things:
intermediate oil sump between the block and oil pan
both cylinder heads, except for exhaust valves nothing else is mentioned to explain this
exhaust valves
piston and rings
on the pic below all items are the same from 05-09 engines except for bolts such as 30 31 34 38 and 39
the hard line for fuel delivery to the intake manifold
both fuel rails
hydro electric engine mounts
