Default '02 A6 3.0L (AVK) CAT replacement DIY?

Hello all,

I have a question in regards to CAT converters replacement DIY way. I've done many major repairs on my car before. I would like to replace both CATs too, but not sure if there's any way to do it "at home" DIY. I have Bentley manual and have clear idea how to do it when having a lift, which I don't have. Please advise. thanks.

Essentially, CAT replacement is muffler work. If you are set up to do this, it should be easy. It does take some special tools and some Kroil soakings unless the pipes and joints are perfect and there is no corossion. I do not do muffler work on jackstands, not enough room for leverage and/or welding that happens on some jobs and danger of jerking the car down on me in the process.

from what i've been told, the motor has to be moved to replace the cats on the 3.0....I can't say so for sure however. I adapted some spark plug non foulers to life my o2 sensors out to keep from getting a check engine light.

I know, working with a car on jack stands would be a crazy idea. Just was thinking loud.

From what I read in the official Bentley manual, in order to replace CATs in 3.0, the transmission has to be removed, without touching engine. Once removed, there is an easy access to the CATs from the bottom.

Also, does anyone know of any trusted shop in Phoenix, AZ area, that would do it?

Thanks

The transmission stays in the car and only needs to be lowered some to get access to the exhaust bolts but it has to be pretty much disconnected from its mounts and rear driveshaft if quattro. This kind of work needs a lift unless you are a contortionist. I have no lift so I don't do under car work except minor maintenance things like fuel filter changes.
