Default '02 A6 2.7T Whine at startup

i just recently bought a used 2002 Audi A6 2.7T Quattro with 77K miles on it. Everything about the car is beutiful except for when i start it up. Upon cold startup, the car whines for about a minute before it stops. I don't know why it does this and am wondering if any of u Audi vets may have some insight on this problem. I'm hoping it's nothing to serious. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you're running a good synthetic like Mobil1 0W-40 or 5W-30/40. Those turbos spin hard and need a real low viscosity oil to prevent damage. You could be hearing the turbos spool.

Other possibilities are the power steering unit and the fan for the HVAC. My fan squeals at power settings under 3. I just haven't had time to pull the fan and lubricate it.

If it whines when you drive it, it could just be gear noise. I have a little of that, too, with the MT6.

You are probably talking about the secondary air pump. The noise should go away after a couple of minutes when the engine starts warming up.

i tried starting the car with the air shut down, still have that whine though. It only happens when the car has been sitting for a couple hours and is cooled down. Once the car runs for about a minute the whining stops and doesn't come back until next time i start the car after sitting for a couple hours.

another vote for secondary air pump......

Also, if the timing belt was recently replaced, sometimes when they are still tight they make a whining sound until they break in which can take up to a month.

I had that whinning noise upon cold startup and one day the car big clanging noises formt he front of the engine, opened the hood and I could see the serpentine belt turning but not straight. Turned off the engine, and saw the belt was 1/2 way off the top center pulley. Tensioner ceized.
