01 A6 2.7T Hitch and trailer wiring questions
Hello,
Have a few questions for those who may have installed a trailer hitch and wiring on their A6.
I'm in the process of getting a hitch for my A6. I only plan on towing a small 6' utility trailer with at most, 800lbs on board (couple of off road bikes).
Getting the hitch from U-Haul, $120 bucks.
Getting the wiring kit from them too, it's only $21.
Question 1. Do I have to be concerned about the extra load the trailer lights will put on the electrical system? Never worried about it before, but never had a vehicle that had this much electronics and monitoring on board either!
Question 2. Will the A6 handle this? U-Haul notes that max trailer weight is 2000lb, which is inline with the Class 1 hitch limit.
Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't do it. Your going to stress out your trany. Buy a junker Pick-up instead. trucks a geared lower for that reason.
You will have A huge brake issue unless you plan to install an electric brake actuator in your car for the trailer. You need a truck to actuate the tung style brake sytem (they suck) and even then the drag with those will blow your trany. I felt the drag in my 2500hd 6.0 that was a uhaul POS.
Not to mension you will have a rear suspension issue if you can't balance the bikes over the trailer axle. But they will bounce anyway
I think your going to ruin your car.
Hey Just rent the uhaul box truck that way you have room for the bikes, the girls and the kegs!

You can buy a hitch ball from WalMart or the like, install it and then use one of those hitch racks for 2, 3 or 4 bikes

You can do it.. 800lbs isnt that much weight. I would, however, get an external tranny oil cooler to go with this setup.
As for the lights, either get a trailer with, or buy and install, LED lights. They suck up so little power the Autocheck shouldnt care, and they are brighter than incandecents.

Oh are you talking Bicycles? I though they were motor cycles. My Bad.
The bicycle rack would work nice I have one. It holds three bikes. Get some bungy Chordes to try and keep them from bouncing. then you eliminate the trailer wieght.

that's 2 dirt bikes 800lbs plus the 1000lb trailer and the drag of the electric brake system. cause that car aint stoppin without it! It would pull it but man your beating that car to death. Hasta la pasta to your rotors they'll be warped.
BTW This is national saftey month for DOT. or we need some money month for Washington.

a 6' trailer doesnt weight 1000lbs
I've got a 7'x12' 4000lb rated trailer that wieghts about 200lbs empty. Loaded to max, and correctly, there's no more than 4-500lbs on the tongue. Stopping is rougher on the brakes, but driven correctly its no more than spirited driving does.
But ya...
