yesterday a tree fell on me car and today...
my passenger side wheel bearing blew the **** up. so I'm driving along and take a corner kinda fast, and go to accelerate again and i get nothing but rpm's. So i check my shifter real quick to make sure i was in gear and i was. soooooooo ****!%R^*) . i press the gas again after taking it outa gear and putting it back and still nothing.
right then i was flipping out trying to figure out what coulda just happened, i was thinking it was either a completely shot clutch or something in the tranny, or a drive shaft. but then again i heard no noise at all. so after ruling everything out and towing my car home i get underneath it and spin the passenger side wheel.
thats all that spins...the wheel and hub bearing....the half shaft doesn't move. I then precede to taking the half shaft out and about 5 ball bearings and some hunks of metal fall down. its the bearing caging.
so my question is....is this my only problem? would this make my whole car not move, almost like it was in neutral?

if you spin the wheel the axle should rotate with it. the only thing the bearing does is lessin the friction and allow the axle to rotate. maybe you ripped teh teath of the axle...

Wouldnt it be more likely you broke a CV joint? Thats the only thing that going to drop ball bearings... and that will prevent your car from moving. It is just a front wheel drive, right? The power is always transfered to the wheel with least resistance, which in this case is the one with the broken axle.

^ I agree its probably the inner CV joint that fell apart hence the bearings all out ( rare but it happens ) but the question about the drive shaft not turning when you spin the wheel probably means the outer CV joint is shot or the splines on the shaft are stripped so I would replace the complete drive shaft on that side including both CV joints, im sure you can get that as a single unit and would be easier to replace

thats what my plan had been, and its a quattro by the way. im guna pick up a new half shaft, which should have the cv joint and everything,( i did one on the other side). and see what happens. My biggest concern was that something beside this (the obvious) was wrong. but thanks! I'm a little less concerned.

also u said ur wheel bearing fell out, when ur getting parts make sure u get a new one too. just a reminder so u don't forget. also get the wheel bearing removal tool. and the bolt in the center of the hub is a 17mm allen. have fun man

if you have a quattro audi and all four wheels are off the ground and its in gear are all the wheels going to turn if you move one by hand?....i ask this because mine do not...is that bad?
