hello all. i have been looking into buying an audi and ran accross a 1999 audi 2.8 a4 quatro with 116000 miles on it. owner said it ran well but would need a timing belt service soon, a 4 wheel brake job, and the flashers and turn signals did not work. if the car has a good carfax history would it be worth buying? I am no stranger to turning a wrench but have never replaced a 2.8 timing belt before and was wondering how hard it would be.

 

intimidate the guy with ur knowledge, and flash 1500 in 20's in his face. hell take it, the the car is well worth that. TB is easy.

 

and u can get rotors and pads for 400, and not sure about the turn signals, probably just burned bulbs.

If that's really all it needs, if the body/interior is good and it drives well, it's probably worth it. I would offer the 1500 and work from there. Depending on the actual condition of the car, you'll prob land closer to $2k. You should have $1500 ready to put into it after you buy it no matter what.

** If this is the price range of car you are looking for, the TB will HAVE TO BE CHANGED soon if not immediately anyway. THEY DO go BAD. It is a good starting point so you know for sure. For piece of mind if nothing else. Believe me, It's worth it.

 

buy it right now man. that's a freaking steal. if for sum weird reason u don't like it, u can fix all the stuff and turn around and sell it for like 6k

 

all 4 bulbs burnt out at once? highly unlikely. besides, the 4-way flashers and turn signals are controlled by the same relay. it's behind the centre of the dash, by the hazard button. easy fix.

that's a good buy if the car's in good condition. even more of a good buy if it's a 99.5.

timing belt service - $600 - $1200. They probably know this which is why it's listed so low.
4 wheel brake job - As long as the calipers aren't frozen, it's cake. 4 bolts hold each caliper on. The outer pad is held in place with a piece of wire and the inner pad has a clip on the back. Rotor has no bolts and is held in place by the rotor and wheel.
flashers and turn signals did not work - Hazard switch. About $35 from the dealer. Takes 10 min and only requires a pair of pliers.

Not a bad price at all.
