Well I went and removed mine last night on the avant.
It's not as simple as it seems, but only takes about 10 minutes

1. Open the rear hatch (in the trunk) and unfold out the skibag into the trunk.

2. In the backseat area: Fold down the center armrest. There is a trim surrounding the ski bag. Pry off this trim (carefully). There are tabs that hold it secure.

3. Unhook the pins that hold the front door latch in place and remove the front swinging door.

4. The ski bag and its frame should push out the rear of the hole.

5. Now there are small slits along the side of the frame - You need to use a screwdriver to push into these slits and pop out some tabs holding in plastic bars/rods. These rods hold in the material of the bag with pressure. Once you pop all the tabs and all 4 pieces come out, the bag will be free. The rods cannot go back in the frame unless you put back the bag.

6. Reassemble by placing it in the seat hole, attaching the front trim, and then reattaching the front latch door.

7. Now you have no ski bag.

 

So I am guessing then that one could not install this ski bag on an A4 that did not come with it??

 

Good???? I took mine out along time ago figured I could do something with it but never did...

 

I used mine last night. lol... I will not elaborate.
