Default wheel bearing or bad brakes?

so my car just started making this really weird awful noise tonight. I did a search on the forums and I THINK it may be a bearing. Thing is, all the posts I found said that their awful sound started happening at about 20mph. I tried barely rolling from a stop sign and the sound still super loud, but seems like it goes away after about 40mph and doest get any louder or change pitch as I speed up from a stop. I'm about to go out right now and jack my car up and see if there's any "play" in the wheel...god i hope not. My other question is could it be my brakes? I've needed some new ones for a while (I can see that the rear ones are pretty low) so could it be a wear sensor or something? I dont think i have the check brake lights on my car, so obviously no lights are lighting up on my console. thanks in advance!

could be a wheel bearing,
its it sorta a growling sound
well, ya, just check for play,
when you turn does the sound change pitch? if so, its probably a bearing

There wasnt any play, but then again the parking brake was set...would that prevent any play from..."playing"? I live on a slight hill so i didnt really wanna undo my brake, also the jack that comes with the Audi makes NO SENSE and was freaking the crap out of me. but when i make a right turn the sound does go away...so I'm tihnking it may be a bearing. I did a yahoo search and I found some for around 60 bucks or so...does that sound about right? http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...ory=Drivetrain that's the bearing I found. is that right? and about how much for an install? 100 bucks ish?

ya probably a bearing,
front? right?
if you can get access to a shop, you could do it, or rent a press
but they are pretty simple, self explanatory, actually
Im not there to drive it, but I would say thats your best bet from only
getting the symptoms youlisted.
good luck

when my bearing went out I got a "wom wom wom wom wom wom wom" sound lol -I love explaining sounds over the internet. A lot of places will check your breaks for free. I took mine to a euro mechanic and had them look the car over. asked them to check the brakes and the bearing and he said the bearing was out. Cost : $45 for bearing from purems.com and $195 for labor. That thing is a bitch to get out if you don't have the right tools there to do the job.

Have someone check the car.

They should charge 1/2 hour labor refundable with the job being completed.
Wheel bearing sound frequency increases with speed.

1/2 labor to diagnose the problem. They'll credit $45 when
they complete the job, labor being $90 per hour.

.5 hours to check the car or change a wheel bearing? no disrespect, but i dont think you could really do a wheel bearing swap, tire off to tire back on, in .5 hours. (are you marking the washer to keep alignment?)
if the sound goes away after 40 mph its not a bearing, possible wheel balance. try doing sharp left-right zigzags - does it go away when you go in one direction?
