Valve Cover Gasket, Rear Diff Seals
Hey all,
So I get my baby back from the dealer after they finish up my timing belt ($750..ugh!) and they tell me that my Valve Cover Gasket is leaking and both my rear differentials seals are leaking..so..they want all this crazy money to fix it. As you might imagine..I'm not exactly rolling in it right now..so I looked the parts up on ECSTuning and the gasket is $24 and the seals are $5 each.
Question...how much of a P.I.T.A. would it be for me to do either of the jobs myself? Are they urgent? Any help and info would be awsome! I don't wanna spend another $750 for them to fix my gasket and seals...

Thanks Denis!
The head cover is easy to do, depend what engine.
Rear diff seals.I did couple of rear unit;100Q,A4, 5000TQ...
If its only wet very little , i means you see its not dry but its not get wet....its not a problem at all.
Change if its wet as engine lost oil.
The rear diff it s easy to do but its a durty job and takes time. Anybody can do it.
1) You can do it in place or remove it. If you have a pit you can do it in place but its not the best.
Put a jack or something under the diff to prevent falling down.
Remove the bolt on the back of the diff.
Remove the CV flanges. 6mm hex bolts i guess.
Remove driving shaft CV
Remove the bolt on the front. its an aluminium brackat that hold it in place.
2) seals;
The flanges are maintain tight in place. You have to pull them out.
2 ways to do it.
a) use 2 pray bars and pray out the flanges.
b) srew 2 bolts, 180 apart, on the flanges. Put hard pieces between the bolts and the diff case.
Screw them to the case and until the flange come out...
3)Remove seal.
Use a hard flat scrw driver pray the seals out. You can tape the end of the screw driver to prevent scratch the aluminium surface.
4)Put seals;
Punch the seals in place with the tool for that.That tool push the seal about 1mm death. Check the death before remove them.
I used 1mm washer, same size,or little smaller than the seal, and a bigger washer. Use a hammer and a big pin tu punch seal on one shot. The bigger washer ll goes to the diff surface and the small washer ll put the seal to the proper death.
DONT use an hammer to knock on the seal.It ll not be in equal death and it ll not last very long. The seal ll rub faster.
DONT buy cheap seals.
We should get Viton seal but the are about 8 time more expenssive. They are much stronger to the heat. They use them for the front flange seal and the tranny output seal, and the crank seal.
5) Center seal; Much more complicated
I did not do it on A4 diff.
But you ll need a big good puller, circle puller, propane torch, hammer.....
If you want i can explain what i did to the 100Q and 5000tq unit.
