Upgrade box, not chip.

Upgrade box, not chip.
I was looking it to chips and 'black boxes' the other week for my 1.9 TDI A4 and am about to buy a box.
The only thing I am wondering about is that it's only got one lead and that plugs in to the engine. There's nothing else going in to it, so instead of intercepting something it's replacing something.
Anyone know what it replaces?
Also at the shop they offered me the choice of a 8 or 10 pin connector. Which one is used for the A4 1.9 TDI (1995 model)?
Aparantly they think I have Bosch pump in there?
Anyone able to shed some light on this please?
Thanks

I was told that it won't get as good a result as having a chip fitted as the chip is mapped to your car and the box is just generic, but aparantly it's not far off. I should still expect about 20-25% more BHP and I can add and remove it at any time without any modifications etc.
It's also about a third of the price of having the car chipped, which makes it even more appealing.
Should make my 90BHP perform like a 115BHP and that's aparantly a noticable difference.
Just wondering about the questions in my first post though before I do anything....

The smart cars are horrible things. I have a motorbike for the summer, cheaper and more fun, but the petrol price isn't as expensive as diesel is here.
I normally pay 85p a litre, which is about $1.99 canadian, so not far off there [&o]
We got used to paying those sorts of prices though, so it doesn't really matter now. It costs about £50 to fill my car up though, which is quite a bit when you think abou it.
It just seems that our government are car haters and we are treated this way.

That's about 31 pence! Wow, that IS cheap.
The only thing over here that's that cheap is the Auto Gas, but it costs about £1,000 ($2,349.27 canadian) to have your car modified to take it as well as your original fuel, so it's not an instant saving and to be honest I suspect the price of that will rise in a year or two over here anyway.
It wouldn't be so bad if the UK had a good public transport system, but it's apauling, so you either pay huge motoring costs or put up with expensive public transport that's not up to stanrdard, uncomfortable and unreliable.
Anyway, I will stop feeling sorry for myself now and try to get this thread back on topic
