Default turbo question

Hi all. Great site. Well i bought a 01 a4 1.8t yesterday at an auction and it ran well for the min they ran it before selling it. I think I got a good deal at $3000 with 120k and extreamly clean inside and out. So I leave the auction with it and there is no power. the turbo is wining and within a mile I start blowing white smoke out the back. I am an Ase cert tech so I would believe the turbo took a ****. Well I have spent the last 10 hours on this site and find a lot of people on here dont like the aftermarket turbos. Has anyone used one and what was the outcome? I hate to spend 1k to buy a new one. the car is for the wife so I dont think I need to mod the car. she cant drive anyway lol!! Just reliable. I know I bought the wrong car for reliabilty but its what she wanted. soooo she gets it and I get to fix it. There are a bunch of aftermarket one out there that are much less $ so any input would be great.

Best thing to do is try to look for someone selling a good used K03. You can pick one of those up for around $100-$300.

Thanks for the reply. Ya thats what I am going to do. a friend of mine who works on all euros has a turbo off a 2000 jetta but not sure if it is the right one. He said that there is a design change 2000.5. He told me to take mine off and we will match it. he is selling to me this one for $200. I am a tranny builder so I am hoping its not to tough. he also said to change the oil feed line

It is not the same, the Transverse Jetta/GTI and Audi TT do not use the same turbo as the longitude A4/Passat.

Ok so I got it to my shop which is 60 miles from home. Clouding out the interstate lol. I scan it and I have several codes. I need a engine speed sensor. Codes p0321-16705 and p0322-16706.I made it to the shop but wile letting it sit and run it died. I let it cool down and it restarted. Is that the crank sensor or the cam sensor? My parts guy wasnt sure. I think its the crank. With the turbo not working will I set a maf code? I have a p0103-16487. If the turbo is not causing this code will I have to replace it or can I just clean it. I also have a p0012-16705 cam position bank 1 timing over retard. This one scares me the most because It seems that its from not changing the oil on time. thanks for any input
