while everyone is thinking about awe vs south bend. what do you you guys like better the s4 6-speed or a4 5-speed. I haven't really researched it and haven't owned a 6-speed but I have heard the the 5-speed is geared much better. was i just talking to a idiot, any thoughts hear?

The A4 will be cheaper and generally more reliable while the S4 will be faster. I don't like the 5 speed 1.8T's gearing, it's short and fast which is nice forcoming off the linebut your revving high while cruising on the highway.

B5 S4 6 speed trannies get to be REAL notchy and shifting is slop. Geared nicely though. The B5 1.8T trannyhas such short gears 1st/2nd is almost annoying, and the 2.8 tranny has taller gears. Some people swap their 1.8 tranny for a 2.8 because of that, and they are supposedly stronger too. But whats that got to do with clutches?

better? i was thinking in terms of upgrading the clutch and then if it wouldn't be better to just switch out the whole transmission

its not gona matter which transmission is on there. you will always use a 1.8T clutch since the clutch is bolted to the engine not the tranny

if you go with a 2.8 tranny you dont need a whole bunch of extra parts. its got the exact same housing as the 1.8T tranny. but with an s4 tranny you have a quite a bit more work to do
