Default transmission problem

my 98 a4 2.8 quattro has been making a strange sound for around a month, i thought it might be the cold air intake i have in there just making a strange sound due to the cold weather. I brought it in for a break job to some non euro shop and they said it sounds like something in the tranny. It seems to be shifting fine, i beat my clutch up a couple months back so it could be that. If anyone has any idea what it might be it would be appreciated.

i think i heard a story about a guy with an a4 making that noise in the tranny, took it the dealer and ended up getting a new tranny because his was shot. take to euro shop to diagnose it.

If its driving fine and shifting ok i dunno. is there anyway you can get a soundclip of it while driving and post it up? Does it make the sound at idle when the car isnt moving? Does it do it at freeway speeds? All the time? Only when clutch is engaged or only when not engaged? When you "beat up" your clutch what were you doing to it exactly? Launching all the time? Need more details if you expect to get any real help over the internet.

I'm not sure about the eeeen fuff fuff fuff, but I have had a miata and a 240sx that made tranny noises, in the miata it was a bearing gone bad, and in the 240 i didn't care cuz it was a pos and after driving it for a couple months with the loudest mostobnoxious sound, it just went away and it now has 260,000mi. on it no problems....

i'd say take it to a euro shop like stated above and have it checked out....

good luck!

It is hard to diagnose noises in person, let alone over the net.

Have a good garage give it a listen. If your car is high mileage, you may have a worn gear that is going. If theydiagnose that it is the transmission, you might want to at least consider changeing the gear oil, while you save up for a new tranny.
