Default Tiptronic Broken?

So let's say you got a tip tranny...you want to use the tip but it won't shift using the shifter...however it will work using the steering wheel controls...but there isn't a problem with the auto in normal mode or sport mode...it's just when you push it to the right it don't shift...unless you use the steering wheel controls...WHY? And how to fix? If you went to a tip chip anyways would that possibly solve the problem?

And also, while I got a thread going...the car has about 54k miles...timing belt before chip? Or can I chip and then do timing belt in about 5k miles?

what year is your A4?

my 99.5 A4 2.8 quattro tip has a magnetic strip underneath the plastic cover of the gear shift. if the magnetic strip is disturbed or damaged, the magnetic strip can be broken or misaligned and will not engage the tiptronic trans.

a decent mechanic with some knowledge of audis should be able to replace it for you for around $200US.

as far as your timing belt, usually you can do that between 60K and 80K. i just did mine at around 62K.

hope that helps.

Sorry I always forget...its an 02 TQ 1.8...that's all it is is a magnet?

I'm just wondering if the chip will put extra wear on the Timing Belt (obviously it will) but how bad will it be...

yeah, a magnetic strip. i had to get mine replaced during a sunroof repair - possible debris fell on it or during cleanup, the body shop guy pushed the vacuum to hard on th plastic. my mechanic repaired it through insurance - part was around $100US.

sorry, i don't know what the strain on the timing belt is on a chipped 1.8T. hopefully one of the more experienced modders w/ turbos can give their insight.

you'll be fine waiting 5k on your tb, a chip is not going to significantly reduce it's life...

that's just it. there's nothing mechanically wrong with your tiptronic transmission. only the controls to engage the tip from your gearshift. steering wheel controls wouldn't be affected if the problem is w/ the magnetic strip under the gear selector. if it's still under warranty, have the dealer check it out.

best of luck!
