Timing Belt & Water Pump
Ok,
So the shop contacted me & told me my water pump is bad. They said 500 for labor but since they already doing it they might as well do timing-belt.
So I hang up & they call me back. They are like man we just looked at procedure & it's complicated. We dont want to do it. (keep in mind they dont specialze in AUDI)
So im like ok. I call this other place they quote me for 550 to 650 (plus parts about 250) so thats 900 worst case scenario.
I only work part-time & I dont have 900 laying around.
My friend offered to help me install T-belt & water pump. He did it before himself but on a chevy. I mean cars are cars... he said he is confident he can do it.
In 5 to 6 hours maybe sooner.
Can you guys give me some feedback on this? Should I do it myself If I have access to tools & knowledgeable friend who works on cars all the time.

What's the deal with the timing? What can go wrong? I wanna know what I might be getting myself into.

Make sure you have the cam holder tool and the crank holder tool. What can go wrong? EVERYTHING CAN GO WRONG! I couldn't imagine doing the timing belt job on my 12 valve without the holder tools. I borrowed them from a friend on the 12 valve forum on audiworld. It's not really a hard job, it's just time consuming really.
Here's some pics from when I did it:

just to say, I did it without the tool. it just required alittle more precision on my part but it can be done, if you are gonna do it yourself just ask jest or me and we can walk you though it.

I spent right over 300 for my change that included the ECStuning timeing belt change kit (everything included). and the antifreeze from there too. Theres a little trick you need to know if you plan on doing it without the cam holder and crank holder tool.

Just make sure you work carefully. If you permit either camshaft to rotate, you will destroy the valves on that side of the engine, perhaps requiring a new cylinder head. To answer your question, on an interference engine, "timing is everything."
