Thinking of getting a used A4...
I've gotten some really good info from these forums. That there's a community like this is really encouraging for me, as that was a big reason I've been a Civic owner for years (screw paying a mechanic!). I'm just looking to see if there's more specific information for my situation.
There are a couple A4's in my $8k budget (really need to replace my current vehicle, hate payments, and don't have time to save more). One is an '01 with 75k the other is an '03 with 95k. I drive a lot for work (200-700 miles per week), but will drive very little in a few months (~80 miles per week).
What are some things specific to the models that I should be looking at if/when I go to look at this cars? Any differences in the two models that aren't obvious (I do like the '03 model a lot more)?
What are some obvious signs that something might be off or need replacing?
I've read tie rods can be an issue. Are tie rods on A4's easy to replace with a couple jack stands?
I kind of doubt the timing belts on these cars have been done. Is there an easy way to identify how long ago it was done? Are timing belts easy to get to on A4's?
I'm somewhat mechanically inclined and have been maintaining my '96 Civic for a few years. I should have most of the tools I'd need.
I'm probably not asking all of the right questions, so feel free to offer up way more advice than I'm bargaining for .
Thanks in advance. I hope I get to become a member of this club.
