Thinking of buying 96 A4

Thinking of buying 96 A4
Hi, I've been looking into buying a 2.8Q (Im changin from a 90 4Runner cause of gas prices). Well, anyways I have a few questions.
A couple of years back my parents bought a new 99 A6 2.8T, not even a year later, it junked out. Im not sure exactly what happened but a sulfur smell started on a roadtrip and the car broke down, after that was fixed it never ran the same. I have also heard that audi's have lots of problems due to all the electrical stuff in the engine.
And well, I really want to buy one, but I wanna make sure if I get one, its not gonna be in shop constintly. I know obviously all of you like your audi's (or else you wouldn't be here). So I just wanna know if buying one is wise.
Also, how do audi's do in the mountains, I am a big snowboarder and drive up to mountains every weekend. Does it get good grip in snow? And does it do good on gas while pushing it hard up hills? Ill also be doing a lot of in city driving next year (because of college).
Would you suggest getting a manual or automatic? I drive a manual now, but Im not sure if I'd like an automatic better.

it's great for the snow....you'll probably get about 20 mpg....no, there aren't many electrical problems.....the sulfur smell would be a failing cat, but i don't know why that would affect performance....search the forums from the last 2-3 days, you'll find all kinds of good information...

i've got 138k on my 96 and i've had to replace the lower control arms (free under recall)....and the tranny, but that's not common....than since i had my tranny replaced the cv joints were exposed to dirt and i had to have them replaced too....other than that, i love this car. i plan on keeping mine for a long time....

Yeah the 96 owns... my parents just sold their 96 a while back, it had 208 000 km on it... which is about 130K miles... and check it out

The car was mint. My dad just wanted something newer, and I have recently been in touch with the guy who bought the car (i traded wheels with him), and the car is still running mint.
The only things my dad had to fix, where the cat (OEM is insanely expensive, so buy aftermarket), and the blower for the heat/ac.
No mods though, for the V6's.
