i am also thinking that it now might be the new thermostat that i got from ECS, ill have to check that out.

could that be the reason why the fluid in my expansion tank isnt moving? (read this from toher stuff on this forum)

I had the exact same problem. Bleed the lines. The bleeder is hidden in one of the 2 black hoses to the right of the battery on my 97. You gotta like pull the black hose thingy back, its hard to explain. Then bleed it and you'll be on your way. I took the whole thing back apart to check the water pump, boiled the t-stat and everything, then found out i just needed to bleed it. Hope this helps.

Default RE: temp problem or is it???? HELP - FIXED

THANKS TO HIWORDS AND MARK FOR THEIR INSIGHT - it was actually my fault!

alright, problem fixed!!!

i didnt have to bleed anything, the root cause was left over garden hose water from the original flush which was only drained out once i had to open the hose for the t-stat replacement which in turn let everything out which equals 90% emptied engine of flush water.

i noticed right away the difference when i added the 50/50 mix and virtually used up all of the stuff but this time a little bit more g12 to compensate for any remaining water that may be in the system already.

Summary:
1) After i reconnected all the hoses that caused my leaks, i did a garden hose flush as suggested by someone on another topic in 2005 - still good info. Got no leaks, everything is sealed up!

2) Drained the radiator via the red plug, didnt notice it at first but not all of the 2 gallon capacity emptied out when I caught it in my tub. Then I went on to fill the reservior with the 50/50 mix and this is wherI mentioned using only about 1 gallon of 50/50 - thought this was weird as it should take more...

3) Closed everything back up, drove around the block and went on the freeway, could not have been more than 10 minutes before the needle shot up to mid point and stayed there even in 65 degree weather in the SF bay area at night at 70 MPH. Took it back to my house and wrote my cry for help. I am used to seeing the needle only go to the middle when i am in traffic and o obviously there is no airflow

what I think happened!
4) In my cry, i said that the coolant was not circulating but i think it actually was!!!! What was happening wsa that I had more of a water mixture (75-90% water to g12) from the orignal garden hose flush that never got drained so the sensors kept reading hot liquid in the engine, cool off and refresh with whats in the reservior. well it did keep circulating and unforutnately, it was cycling the hot water keeping it from cooling!!! I am thinking this is because the water mix never had a chance to cool becuase the sensor kept telling it to circulate and also taking into consideration the boiling point of a predominately water mixturehas to be a lot lower than the g12 mix. So in fact, it was circulating but because of the overly bearing water ratio, it never received adequate temperature coolant! The g12 mix is able to "hang out" more because of the difference in boiling temp so it sits in the reservior longer.

5) So now its in my driverway and im puzzled as hell. used the red plug to drain and now I decided the replace the t-stat back to the original which inadvertantly helped me because it freed up the rest of the garden hose water! Now my tub looks like it carries about 2 gallons

6) Sealed everything back up and refilled the expansion tank, it accpeted about 1.9 gallons of the 50/50 mix and i knew i was on the right track. Fired the car up and took a drive on the freeway and everything is working as normal, the temp gauge hangs out at about 1/4 unless i hit traffic then itll flucrate based on me moving continuously.

lessons learned:
1) OPEN UP EVERYTHING IN ORDER TO GET ALL THE FLUID OUT! SOME LIKE TO HIDE THE HOSES!

2) APPROXIMATELY 2 GALLONS ARE REQUIRED FOR A 1997 TQM

3) IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT! (the temp was actually working fine but since i got the ultimate t-belt kit, i thought might as well replace it and then i ran into this!)

someone will likely run into the problem a few years down the road...
