Default Steering Leak - Help

Took my '01 A4 1.8T (it's got almost 47k on it, and still under Audi Assured until Aug) into the dealership for some steering related noise. Sounded like the tie rods possibly. Turns out there are power steering fluid leaks on both sides of the rack, which I'm told needs to be replaced. The ps pump might be okay, they're not sure. Naturally, this is considered "wear and tear" and not covered. Nevertheless, being somewhat of a car/Audi newbie, I was surprised to hear the diagnosis. Does this sound at least somewhat normal?

Thanks,
TS

Yeah it's not abnormal for the steering rack to develop leaks if it has been abused by its owners. I'm sure the Audi dealer wants an arm and a leg though. Any thoughts of finding a private Euro mechanic?

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I might see about taking it elsewhere, though I'd have to drive quite a ways to get to a decent Euro mech.

Where are you located? Maybe there is someone that can help you localy from the forums? Or make friends with an Audi tech and see if he'll do a job for you on the side for less than what the dealer charges... Of course having the availability of a lift is probably important.

I'm in Boston and as luck would have it, a friend just called with a lead on a good local mechanic. We'll see what happens. Parts should arrive tomorrow and we'll go from there. Good tip on looking for help in the forums! Thanks all.
