if you use an amp that is rated at say 1500 watts, or say 800 watts rms
and the speakers can only handle say 200 watts rms each
you either have to wire them in parallel, so the amp sees some resistance, to lower the load, otherwise if you turn the volume up, even with the gain all the way down, you have a chance of having the voice-coils beings being pushed too far out, ie the x-max, and you will either fry your voice-coils, or the amp will go into thermal protection and shut down and if your lucky only blow a fuse
right now i have a jl 12w6 and a jl 500x1 amp
which is plenty for me
if you use a high-powered 2 channel amp, i would just use one of the channels and set the sub up in parallel with the amp which will cut down the power, but the amp will run cooler which is always good
