I **** you not, man. I couldn't believe it. The GF and I took a ride to Niagara Falls early this summer. Filled up before leaving, got all the way there, and topped off the tank right before leaving. I track my MPG every time and I thought something was wrong or that I couldn't do math anymore. Since then, I've kept track on any longer drives, and sure as hell, any highway trip I take, it's solidly over 30mpg. No AC running, windows and sunroof vented, and cruising between 70 and 75 (no CC in use), and I hit that number every time. I'm not the only one either - several of us were posting in a thread about mileage and there are a decent number of us getting those numbers. It pays to maintain your 30v

Here's one of the reviews I found on MSN Autos. A lot of the consumer reviews had some of the most common, high expense stuff listed on them.
But that review doesn't distinguish between the 1.8 and the 2.8 except for where it talks about the timing belt. So, the ABS issue isn't necessarily a problem that a 2.8 would be more likely to have...according to that review.

The 2.8L engines don't have power output stages so that won't be a problem, the timing belt/water pump and valve cover gaskets/cam seals are about the only things that need to be replaced on a 80k basis. Other than that, just minor problems.
Headlight switches don't commonly fail, the hazard switch has problems though which is cheap.

What's the usual cost on that stuff?? I know that the timing belt isn't too bad, but I don't know about the water pump, and valve cover gaskets/cam seals.

honestly, youll see me hating alot on audi BUT i love my 30v 2.8. i mean really its the only thing on my car that doesnt have problems! i now have 155k on my car and the only problem i ever had was a melted o2 wire and a leaky valve cover gasket, both of which are an easy DIY job.

i honestly love the engine in my car, as far as everything else, ive had to replace all the control arm, i had to replace my transmission once, and some other small stuff. my sunroof doesnt work, my cruise control doesnt work, blah blah blah....

Occasional problems on this vehicle, 4-cylinder engines only, are failures of the Engine, Timing Belt and the Ignition Power Stage.
thats not good

Wow thats a really clean 98...
Currently 132k and runs effortlessly. It has no torque but get it up to speed and it just keeps pushing. So far just a bad alternator, coolant sensor and recently a leaky radiator. I do have the infamous abs module problem but it doesn't bother me. The O2 sensors are on their way out but thats non related. The V6 is always thirsty but damn its reliable. Why the 2.8 though, why not a 1.8T?
