sliding in the rain with quattro
I know quattro isn't going to make my car perform magic on the road, but being that this is my first Audi, i just want a little feed back. I drive on a lot of backroads, and i do not hit 90+mph, but i drive my car in a spirited manner pretty often. The other day, it began to rain...not extremely hard, but at a decent pace. I have taken turns before with my car when the pavement was dry and quattro seems like it handles turns/bends at ease even at high speeds, just as if the car was glued to the road. Anyways, when it was raining out, i took a turn a little quick and my back end slid out...i corrected the slide and straightened out, no damage done..was actually a bit fun...but it caught me off guard. A few miles further i came to a sharp bend with no one in sight...i dropped it from 4th to 3rd, gassed and turned and slid out around the bend. It wasnt like a Drift Nationals slide...but my car definetely lost traction and was sliding out...
My tires are in pretty good shape. They have plenty of tread left on them. I have the 16" Audi wheels with sport suspension. Is it normal that my car is sliding like that if i push it when it's wet? Once again, i'm not expecting quattro to handle like an F1 car around turns, but i'm just curious and want to see what you guys have experienced.

You can make any car slide if you want. Alot has to do with the tires and tire pressure. Make sure you're not over-inflated. I can't attest to your type of tires. I run separate winter and summer tires. I hate all-season tires although there are some good quality ones out there. Most people in Europe have 2 sets.
Some people buy tires because they're rated for "High Milage". These usually are of a harder compound and not made for aggressive driving.
Do some tire research, check your pressure, consider running 2 sets and get some nice, gooey summer tires like Bridgestone S03s.
I have a real hard time making my Audi slide out. Quattro is the best!!

yeah i talked to a few people and they said tires as well. the tires on the car are what came on it (i bought it privately)....they are all seasons, and they are not a high performance name brand....i know that i just have to watch out when its wet out, i mean if i were driving normal/speed limit...i would have absolutely no problems, but when i push it in the wet weather, i now know the limits of my tires.

This is interesting. I discovered that when there is a lot of snow on the road i can get my car into a full on all wheel drive power slide. you can tell when the front wheels lose traction because the rear end tries to kick out. It sounds like your getting some loss of traction in front and when the power is transferred to the back, the torque is causing the rear to break lose ase well.
You should find an empty parking lot the next time it rains and toy with it a bit. I found in the snow, if i feathered the throttle a bit when i felt both front and back break lose, i regained traction quite quickly in most cases.
Happy sliding
