side view mirrors: a mind of their own

side view mirrors: a mind of their own
The side view mirrors on my 2002 A4 3.0 6spd Quattro are
misbehaving, and my dealer (after 3 visits) has been unable to
correct the problem.
I've followed the owner's manual to "couple" one of the seat/mirror
presets to the electronic key, however the key will not, under any
circumstance, return either mirror to its preset position.
Further, left to their own devices, the driver side mirror will, over the
course of each week, adjust itself noticably outward (from the car),
and the passenger side mirror will adjust itself upward and slightly
inward.
Following my third visit, the dealer claimed that Audi corporate has
acknowledged a "software problem" that, to their knowledge,
affects mine and one other car. This sounds a bit weak to me.
I'd like to learn whether anyone has seem similar behavior and what,
short of an exorcism, has been the fix.
Thanks,
Jim

RE: side view mirrors: a mind of their own
Jim,
If you happen to still be interested in this topic, I can tell you that I have had the problem in both my 2003 A4 and my 2005 A4. The driver's side mirror does what it wants. The dealer told me that I am not properly following the manual and they cannot reproduce the problem.
I have no idea how to get it fixed and they clearly did not address the problem in the 2005 refresh of the A4.

RE: side view mirrors: a mind of their own
The same thing happend to me. I found out that a neighbor of mine was afraid he was going to clip my mirror with a big truck and folded in the pas. side mirror. This knocked all the motorized parts out of alignment and it did what it wanted. someone may have moved you mirrors manualy?

I suppose that is possible, but now that problem stopped in the 2005.5 My new problem is that the remote keeps going out of synch with the car and I have to lock/unlock with the key. I am thinking that the mirror was moving because of some malfunction in the preset or receiver for the remote system.

I think there may have been a bullitin to replace the keys on the 05's due to non operation. Not sure if this would be related to the mirrors not working properly but its a possibility.
