i'm new to Audi and also sort of new to manual tranny's(7 mos.) question is when i'm downshifting when coming to a complete stop, sometimes the shifter acts like it doesnt want to go in first gear. is that normal? thks guys/girls

 

how fast are going when you try to downshift to first... they have back pressure plates(not sure if that names right) to help keep you from shifting into first at 80.. but mine is hard to get into first until i get down to a slower speed

 

* synchros - Pretty normal, but you can try changing your trans fluid or shift into 2nd before first

 

you shouldn't really be downshifting into first gear anyway. let it coast in 2nd gear until the revs drop to just above idle, then either push in the clutch or slip it into neutral for the last few feet before you stop.

 

I would leave it out of first unless your at a complete stop.

 

i never use first unless im at a dead stop and going to move, but sometimes its difficult to get it into first when at a stop, just put it in second and then down shift that works for me

 

Yeah, you should never be downshifting to first gear..a lot of cars it is hard to put ti into first even going 5 mph..if you must go into first..go form second then leave it in neutral for second and it will go into first easier..shouldnt even have to downshift to first though unless your going about 3 mph lol

 

dont listen to these guys, there's a synchro going into 1st gear, so use it. if you want to shift to first go ahead... its just a bit pointless is all

 

i shift into 1st gear all the time doing 5-15mph. at anything less than 1200rpms in second gear and my car will shutter quite a bit

just give it a second and do it right, a little rev matching never hurts either

 

i almost always have to shift into first going slow, i get bad clutch chatter and the car has no power under 20mph in second
