Rough idle and stalling, already cleaned TB
Hi all,
I have a '97 A4 1.8T Quattro with 98K miles and have been having an issue recently with rough idling and stalling. The car pretty much is always rough idling now. The stranger problem to me is that when I'm coming to a stop, or slowing down enough to turn onto another street, the engine nearly stalls (sometimes does stall, but usually the RPMs bounce back up after nearly stalling). Sometimes this happens right away, and sometimes it takes a few minutes of driving before the issue starts. I was told that it was likely a gunked up throttle body, but I cleaned it today and the problem did not change at all. The car operates normally when already moving and accelerating. There aren't any check engine lights or anything else.
Any ideas?

I would try to read codes anyway.
If it is misifiring, then there are codes.
If you are unable to get the codes read, you could always try to reset the ECU and let it reset everything.
Just pull neg battery cable for five mins. Then, allow a good 100 miles and see if it smoothes out. If not, go get a code reader or use the sticky posts to find someone with a vag-com near you.
