What do you mean by "reset the transmission"? I don't believe it learns like the ECU.

well as in it when it changes gears it seems a little rough, ive vag-com and it says everything is okay (should i do a module search? or thats useless on a 1996???), anyway im thinking the cpu learnt from my previous high way driving and is bringing its "bad habits" into my city driving... anyway to reset that? so it changes gears more smoother?

also one more question.. if i vag-com and it says error codes then i clear them, and test again and they dont come back.. how long should iwait for before knowing they wont come back for good...?

sorry about the 21 questions

1996 transmissions aren't able to be scanned afaik. The first ones that had a computer were the tiptronic trannies, which started on the 1997 1.8t's. And 1998's on the 30Valve.

You may want to do a transmission flush/fill. It made a big diff when I did mine.

What kind of codes are you clearing?

Clearing codes doesnt clear the problems.. it just resets it. Its kinda like a Circuit breaker.. if it goes off. you need to fix the problem otherwise you are doing yourself no good. Hope that makes sense I am damn tired

Jest is correct. The 96's had no adaptive programming. When tiptronic came out the ECU was given the ability to learn/change shift points based on how the user drove it in Tip mode, and lightly translate that over to Auto mode.

Tranny flush will probably do you good.

Well you may not see the code in a year or you may see it in a day. It's hard to tell if it was a one time occurance or a repeat offender.
