Default Replacing The Clutch

I just bought a 01 A4 1.8t and the clutch has some wear on it. I asked the dealership how much it would cost to replace it and they said about $3,300. $1,300 for parts and the rest labor. I asked why labor was so much and he said that the entire quattro system as well as the engine would need to be removed to access the clutch. Is this true? There's no way in hell I'm gonna pay 30% of the cars value to replace a clutch.

Do you have to take engine out to do clutch?

Find an independent shop and get a second estimate.

No way you have to take the engine out to get to the clutch that's total BS.

I just had mine done at a dealership for $1300.00 (that also included front and rear brake bads) however they didn't charge me labor on the clutch. :-)

Try again and see if you can't sit down and chat with the service manager. (That's all I did and they didn't charge me labor for the clutch).

Wait till someone confirms that you don't have to take out the engine (I'm almost positive, it just wouldn't be smart engineering) and tell him you know you're being BS'ed

Where abouts are you located?

PS- Even with the labor for the clutch and both sets of pads I was only quoted $2,200.00 or something close to that.

For the RA4 Stg2 clutch (a very nice upgrade based on the B5 RS4 clutch combined with a superlight flywheel) we charge $1249, and then the install is $600... Total = $1849.

That's with a very nice clutch setup... and you might say that you don't need all that.. However, since the car has quite a few miles on it, you should defintiely get a new flywheel either way, and a stock flywheel isn't any cheaper than this...

This is why we always suggest going with a kit like this. If you want to go a little cheaper and you don't think that you'll ever get more than 270-300hp, then go with the RA4 Stg1 Clutch kit (basically an S4 clutch with that same light flywheel), which is only $1049... then the bill would end up at $1649... still way way less than the dealer wants, and you have a better clutch that you can actually have some fun with!

Dude I got my timing belt, water pump, and OEM clutch replaced for $1995.00 at Speedware Motorsports. That is a ridiculous price.

Unless, of course, you're replying directly to the first post ... by rediculous, you mean our price is good right?

Adding timing belt/water pump to the job is cheap.. it's an easy thing to do while you're doing the clutch. That's probably exactly what we would charge for that combination as well.
