Rebuild/swap? 1.8t qtip to stick.. lots of quest.
So, im not quite sure on where to begin to think of where to ask this so i figured this would be the best place, so if its wrong sorry please move it..
ok now thats out the way, my current project is Kathrine ( 2001 a4 1.8t q-tip) I noticed it has a 5v head on her, and was pondering about getting some decent hp gains, as well as improved reliability! kathrine has 111,500 miles on her and i feel she is running out of breath.
The question ! - I want to rebuild her heart, complete rebuild and i have tried to search for kit's/parts but im having a hard time. The 5v head on it would a 20v head be more efficent? Would it be worth it? I know its a automatic ( thx to the wifey, yet her ws6 is a stick o.O ) Is it also possible to do a auto>manual swap? I did it in my old project ***** ( 91 civic hatch).. If its possible what all would i need?
Getting good use of the newb status!

is it worth it? that's the question, why not get in debt and buy a new car every 3 years ( then you will always be in debt ) buy an old classic and take some pride in it and its yours,
new cars loose 50% of the value in less than 3 years, old classics have been there done it and got the T shirt ( but increase in value ) the older the better pre 1972 in the UK because its road tax free and has classic car insurance in the UK that is

5v head = 20v head
Have you actually done a compression check? Maybe it feels as though it's running out of breath because it's a stock 1.8T, and they are pretty pathetic in stock form. 170hp for your 2001... with a tiptronic. You've got a 9 second 0-60 or so. Vroom!
Chip it before you rebuild it.

avant80@2.6 : what???? lol im not following you
headshok2002: I thought it was more, but 170.. ouch. I havent rana compression check yet, the car was in pretty bad shape when i bought her, i have did some easy bolt on's ( cone filter upgrade w/ custom heatsheild, exhaust turbo back w/ remus muffler) it still feels weak, ill do the compression check tonight. I was just thinking about rebuilding her and getting a fresh start. I am doing the timing belt on friday afternoon (have to drive 103 miles to get it done)
thanks for the responses! keep em coming.. what about the auto>man swap

If the compression check comes back even and high across all 4 cylinders, then chip the thing! Do the tip-chip too if you want to make your shifts 5 times faster.

Better yet do a CLT (cylinder leakdown test) that will tell you how much air is getting past the piston rings and the the valve train. I bet you that it would be less than 7% on and audi with over 100k which is how much wear is on a chevy motor after 20k. I recently did a CLT test on a 99 1.8t at the shop with over 200k miles on it and the leakdown was only 9%, thats amazing if you think about it.
